Hello!

I'm a graphic designer and illustrator by trade, designing books and resources for an educational publishing house. I dabbled with pottery during school and university, but then forgot about it until the first season of The Great Pottery Throw Down which aired in 2015. I knew straight away that I needed to get my hands back into clay and enrolled on a course of throwing lessons with the wonderful Yoka Kilkenny of Siramik. I was hooked after my first lesson with wheel throwing and quickly became obsessed with it! Fast forward 2 blocks of 10 lessons with Yoka and I had set up my own studio at home in my small garden shed and the rest as they say is history!

Form, function, colour!

I'm drawn mostly to creating functional pieces that can be used daily. As a graphic designer I'm drawn to colour and simple bold patterns. All my items can be used daily, they are glazed in dinnerware safe clear gloss glaze and are dishwasher friendly (unless otherwise stated). I use stains and oxides to mix coloured slip - a liquid clay - to decorate all my work.

Crazy about colour!

It's no secret to those that know me... I love a good colour swatch! I'm pretty obsessed with colour and actually have a whole other blog dedicated to colour play and experimentation over at www.theunpluggedpencil.com.

Colour is a funny beast in ceramics, what goes in the kiln looking one way usually comes out looking completely different, so there are usually colour test tiles in amongst each kiln load of mine.

I use combinations of stains and oxides to create my unique colour palettes.

New works in the making

I'm currently experimenting with a new decoration technique which combines my love of printmaking with pottery. I'm very excited about this new body of work and the design possibilities it is opening up for me. If you would like to see more 'behind the scenes' please follow me on instagram @rhi_sparks.
